Cheese-stuffed pasta shells trace their roots to Italian-American cuisine, inspired by the traditional Italian dishes like conchiglioni ripieni. As Italian immigrants brought their culinary traditions to the United States in the early 20th century, they adapted classic recipes to suit available ingredients and evolving tastes. Stuffed shells became popular in home kitchens for their versatility and ability to feed a crowd. Today, they remain a beloved staple in both American and Italian homes.
What makes this dish especially comforting is the creamy blend of ricotta and Parmesan, given a fresh lift with spinach and baked to perfection with a blanket of marinara and mozzarella. It’s a fantastic way to sneak in some greens while still pleasing even the pickiest eaters.
If you’re following a gluten-free diet, this recipe is incredibly easy to adapt. Simply swap the traditional pasta shells for gluten-free giant pasta shells. You’ll still get all the flavor and comfort of the original dish—without the gluten.
